Welcome to the Syria
Shrine Provost Guard's Website!
Syria Shrine's Provost

Rabban Lester L. Bartlett. The
primary responsibility being to serve the Potentate by maintaining safety
and order at Shrine functions.
The first meeting was held on April 9, 1962 with approval from Potentate
Harry M. Montgomery. With 31 police officers and firemen present Noble C.
Fred Marshall was elected the first Captain, Noble William Geary was elected
1st Lieutenant, Nobles Edward A. Koch and Joseph R. Thompson were elected
2nd Lieutenants, Noble William J. Gilmore was elected Treasurer, and Noble
Robert S. Jones was elected Secretary.
The Provost Guard Unit holds 10 regular meetings throughout the year.
Beginning in 2006 the January and February meetings will be suspended. However, the Unit is very much
active throughout the year serving the Potentate at the various functions.
In addition to the various assignments the Unit holds regular social
functions. These include dinners, picnics, and other fun events.
The Provost Guard Unit also holds membership in the Mid Atlantic Shrine
Association Provost Guard. The Unit has had several of its members hold the
position of Colonel. The MASA conventions are held twice a year. One in the
spring, usually in the Colonel's home area, which is for the Provost members
of MASA. The second is usually held in September and designated by the Mid
Atlantic Shrine Association for all member units.
Overall the unit enjoys the feeling of being able to serve the Potentate and
Shrine in this important role.
