Provost Membership
Membership in the Provost
Guard originally required affiliation with a Law Enforcement Agency or Fire
Service in order to be considered a "regular" member. Others not employed as
Law Enforcement Officers or Firefighters could become "reserve" members but
could not hold office in the unit. As time went on that requirement was
changed and the unit now accepts anyone interested in serving the Shrine in
the capacity of a Provost Guard. Although you will still find many of the
members do have a background in Law Enforcement or the Fire Service you will
also find a mix of individuals that serve in private sector roles.
In order to qualify for membership you must complete an application, have a
member of the unit sign your application, and then be voted on at a regular
meeting. Once approved you will be provided a uniform which is to be worn
during the performance of your assigned duties. Those duties are approved by
the Potentate and under the direction of the unit Captain and his officers.
Once you have been approved for membership you are permitted to attend
regular meetings, offer your opinion on subjects discussed at those
meetings, and hold office in the unit. The requirements placed upon you are
those of maintaining order at various functions, act in accordance with your
position as a member of the unit, and participate in providing service
whenever possible. This can mean being assigned at posts requiring your
attention to be directed to duties while others are enjoying themselves.
This is not a role everyone enjoys but if you feel as though you can be of
service in this role please complete an application and turn it in to the
unit Secretary, one of the other officers, or the Shrine's main office.
The Provost Guard Unit is a very active and critical unit. The unit is also
often times brought to the light of those members of the general public who
attend Shrine functions. And although the uniform resembles that of a Law
Enforcement Officer, there is no actual police powers bestowed on its
members through their membership in the unit. |
